Apple’s iPhone GPS-less tracking

No built-in GPS might have been the downside of Apple’s iPhone. With Apple keep adding new features to the iPhone, owners now have the ability to GPS-less tracking.

The new released 1.1.3 iPhone software update included the GPS-style feature, as Steve Jobs announced today at the US Macworld event. The new feature tracks position by detecting WiFi access points and close by mobile phone towers for triangulation in Google Maps. On top of the satellite view from Google, you could view street names and building names clearly.

It’s a risky but smart move by Apple, considering most of other mobile phone developers integrate actual GPS receiver into their devices. Built-in GPS could be a bad idea on iPhone, as GPS decreasing battery life.
