GPS – the cause of threat for the NYC taxis

This fall might be a hard time to hail a taxi for all the tourists travelling to New York. The latest announcement by the city’s taxi Commission says that each of the 13,000 number of cabs in the city will need to install a touch-screen GPS system complete with credit-card processor. New York City’s Taxi Worker’s Alliance has threatened to initiate a strike as an opposition to the announcement on the month of September.

The Alliance is not a union but is known as an advocacy party in the city with members of more than 8000 New York Taxi workers. Alliance group has been known to promote a strike in the past.

The Commission had proposed previously a requirement for taxi owner’s liability insurance on May 13 1998 which was followed by a work stoppage by the cab owners as a protest against the scheme. Although the strike only persisted for a day, it resulted in a major transportation deficiency among the various classes of people.
