With China being such a big market to be tapped into and a high demand for navigation services, it is not surprising that an iSuppli report shows domestic GPS shipment could rise to 16.5 million by 2011 which would be 10 times more than the 1.4 million in 2007. China manufacturers are of course cashing in on this by developing handsets which supports GPS.
Wireless service operators are also seeing this as a key value-added service which is able to help them offset their falling average revenue per year. As such, two of China’s mobile service operators China Mobile and China Unicom are going to the extent of teaming up with digital-mapping, handset and chipset suppliers to bring the navigation service to their users. The thing about GPS handsets is that it receives mapping data through wireless networks while personal navigator devices utilize embedded mapping data. Therefore, GPS enabled handsets only requires a free GPS navigation software and a $2.50 monthly subscription fee.
