Here is another example of GPS being put to good use. An announcement was made by the port officials in Oakland that a new program will be started with wireless phone company Sprint or Nextel in which to provide the ability for shipping companies to keep track of the containers when out of the port.
The new system is called the Port Truck Tracker and works by having a software installed into the cell phone which the truckers are carrying that allows their position to be tracked by GPS within 30 feet of their location. This system is also able to benefit the community by allowing the shipping companies to deal directly with the smoke pollution problems from truckers driving into off-limits residential neighborhood.
At the moment, only 300 of the 3000 trucks in Oakland which transports containers from its port has the system installed, but it is expected to be available to all truckers within a year.
