GPS for better Public Transport Service

For those who think that GPS is only good for car users to lead them smoothly to their destination, take a look again as now this can benefit bus riders as well. Time is as important for someone with a car or using public transport.

In line with that, 55 busses in Guelph, Ont. transit fleet were equipped with a Canadian-owned technology, NextBus which will be able to allow them to maximize their time between the next bus arrivals instead of waiting pointlessly around. In this case, instead GPS showing the user to their destination is, it is used to track the location of the bus.

Data from the Global Positioning System will be used with other formulas that take into consideration the time, day and season to predict the next arrival time. The information is then relied to the customers using the internet through signs at bus stops or web-enabled cell-phones, mobile devices or the home computer. This technology will not only help the customer maximize their time but also the bus company maximize their profit by allowing them to track their problems from customer complains.
