British government is testing a technology that uses GPS to get current location and local speed limit to disallow going faster than allowed. Although we don’t think it’s safe to go over the speed limit, we also doubt that it’s safe to use this kind of limitators, as it might be necessary sometimes to get some additional speed to avoid an accident.
Anyways, it’s not really clear if this would be a voluntary installation or would come preinstalled. At least, it should make your assurance cheaper if your car includes one of these.

I can’t believe anyone would be allowed to do this. It’s a neat technology, but not reliable enough to override manual speed control. What happens when you go through a tunnel or loose signal momentarily or have occasional hickup in signal? I can just see it now, a car momentarily loses signal and the GPS hickups and shows that you are now travelling 120Mph and then proceeds to slam on your brakes in the middle of a highway to reduce your speed by 50Mph. No thanks! That fuse is getting pulled ASAP if I ever buy a car with one of these devices installed.
